Introduction

Data collected

UGU currently has eleven samples of students who have been followed through the school system. The samples are nationally representative and make up about 10 percent of the population in a birth cohort. With UGU’s collections, it is possible to follow a cohort through the education system and compare different cohorts at the same time in the educational system.

The first cohort consists of individuals born in 1948. Five years later, another cohort of students born in 1953 was added. The next cohort includes students who were mainly born in 1967. Since then, new cohorts have been added at five- to six-year intervals. This cohort consists of students who were in grade 3 in the year 2014. The majority were born in 2004.

Details about selection principles and collected information can be accessed via the menu on the left where you can read about each cohort. The table below provides an overall picture of what data is available for each cohort.

The data collected are mainly of two types

  1. School administrative data, which is collected annually by Statistics Sweden during the time the pupils are in the general school system (primary and secondary school). This information is provided by the school office and is available in various lists, e.g. school, class, special support, study choices and grades. Survey data from the pupils are collected, for most cohorts, for the first time in compulsory school year 6.

  2. The collection in school year 6 concerns e.g. questions about self-perception and interest in learning, school attitude, hobbies, school motivation and future plans. Furthermore, results from various aptitude tests and knowledge tests carried out in school year 6 are included. For several of the samples, questionnaire data has also been collected from the students’ parents and teachers.

General information about collected data

In order for the collected data to be of the greatest possible value, the ability to study the development among students within the same year group, but also be able to make comparisons between different year groups is desirable. In order to fully meet the latter condition, the data should be acquired at the same age and be identical, or as similar as possible, so as to enable meaningful comparisons between cohorts.

For various reasons, this is not possible. Hence, some of the instruments used may need to be revised and supplemented. The table below presents the data available for each cohort.

This is followed by general information on how the collections were carried out for pupils in grades 3, 6 and 9, and after compulsory school. This is followed by general information on selection principles and an interactive list of variables. For those who want to take a closer look at one or more cohorts, it is possible to read specifically about each cohort’s selection, collections, tests, surveys, etc.

Questionnaires

Questionnaire Students

The student questionnaire is administered to students in both the 6th and 9th grades. The distinction between the two grades is indicated by the first number following the prefix “QS” in the variable names. For instance, variables collected from the questionnaire for 6th-grade students begin with “QS6,” while variables collected from the questionnaire for 9th-grade students start with “QS9.”

Collection 6th grade

The questionnaire includes 20 questions in addition to the cognitive tests. Most of the questions are formulated as main questions with a number of sub-questions with four or five answer alternatives.

Collection 9th grade

The questionnaire includes 26 questions and an opportunity to comment. Most of the questions are formulated as main questions with a number of sub-questions with several answer alternatives.

“The corona survey”

During the period December 2020 to April 2021, the UGU project conducted a survey on the impact of corona pandemics on life inside and outside school. Most of the participants then went to 1st grade upper secondary school. The survey focused on questions about the consequences of the corona and covid-19 pandemic, especially within school, but also about life in general. A total of 3068 students responded to the survey, which was given exclusively as an online survey.

Collection 12th grade

The questionnaire includes 34 questions where some have subquestions and an opportunity to comment. The questionnaire was fielded in the spring of 2023. 1923 students answered the questionnaire.

Questionnaire for parents and guardians

The questionnaire for parents and guardians is administered to parents and guardians when the student attends the 6th grade. All the variables included in the questionnaire for parents and guardians is identified by the “QP” prefix. The questionnaire conducted in 2017 included 14 questions. The first three questions concern certain factual circumstances such as who answers the questionnaire and to what extent the student has participated in preschool activities. Most of the other questions aim to provide a picture of the contact between children and parents and how the parents view the school’s activities. Each question consists of a number of sub-questions.

Questionnaire for teachers

At four previous collections, the teachers have also received a questionnaire to get as complete a picture as possible of the student’s school situation. The teacher questionnaire consists of 24 questions. Most of the questions are formulated as main questions with a number of sub-questions. All the variables included in the questionnaire for teachers is identified by the “QT” prefix.

Missing values

Within the dataset, specific values (-999, -888, -777, -666, 88, and 888) are observed, each carrying a distinct meaning for missing information. Among these values, -999 and 88 signify “No answer,” -777 denotes “Did not participate,” -666 represents “Should not answer,” and -888 indicates “Students who were not graded in grade 9.” These values have been assigned specific interpretations to accurately capture and differentiate various types of missing data within the dataset.
